If you’ve ever needed a tradie, whether it’s to fix a leaky pipe or a complete bathroom renovation,
you’ve probably been told you should get three quotes.
Have you ever wondered why?
Is there science behind the logic, or is it just a random number our dads and grandads plucked out of the air?
The rule of three just makes good sense because it gives you
a range of options – cheap, middle and high-end – to choose from.
We don't know where it came from, but there's obviously method to the madness.
The cheap and nasty guys are going to be the DIY handyman guys that aren't qualified or licensed,
who are cheap because they're not experts in their field - so don’t go with that one.
Your high-end guy is either really good and busy, or he’s just taking you for a ride because he knows you’re desperate.
The best bet as a consumer is to go with the guy in the middle
because he’ s going to be the fairest, the firmest and deliver value for money.
The same logic applies when choosing a builder to renovate your property.
While it may seem easier to rely on advice from family and friends who have renovated, it’s important to do your own research as well.
Customer experience trumps customer service these days.
You may hear about a builder through family or friends but ask how happy they were with the quality of work,
whether the builder stuck to the budget and how responsive they were in communication.
When it comes to renovations, not all builders are equal.
Some may project manage the entire renovation, others may not.
Why does that matter?
Because if you apply the three-quote principle to every tradesperson involved in a renovation – builder, plumber, electrician, cabinet maker, waterproofer, tiler and more – that’s a lot of time and energy spent on finding the right people for the job.
A good builder should be rolling out the red carpet for you and be your one point of contact from start to finish.”
It’s a logistical nightmare for you to try and sequence every stage of the project.
Ultimately, three factors will influence your decision when choosing a builder – price, location or availability.
You’ll notice the word “or” rather than “and”, because you’ll never find all three.
If you want the job to be done well and quickly, it won't be cheap.
